August 2010

Here we in the middle of the 3rd Quarter in 2010! There weather is starting to give us a little break from the extreme heat... Mid 70's to Mid 80's now with less humidity... A nice time to be digging...

August 7th (Saturday)

August 8th (Sunday)

Hunt #46: Headed back out just before 11am and hit two spots... The first produced very little... The 2nd site was just a place I spotted driving down the road a piece... and I'm glad I stopped :-)

My first target was a 1925 Wheatie @ 2"...

This Target was 3-4" down and definately had a sweet silver sound...
Thought it was a dime (Same Size) ... but Silver is Silver :-)
Look it may have been a Silver Cuffling (Silver Bling # 9 for 2010)

10 minutes later.... solid 12/46 @ 3" and it had that nice shiny silver sound :-)

Hello Mr. 1908 Barber Quarter (Silver # 58 for 2010)

This is my 1st Barber Quarter :-)

August12th (Thursday)

Hunt #49: I got out for 2.5 hours tonight... and had a great time :-) I went back to the spot that yielded me the 1908 Barber Quarter on Saturday... The place was built in 1928 and I figured there had to be a few more goodies there lieing in wait :-)

This target was about the 5th one I dug and it was screaming 12/47 loudly...  Its HUGE! (Exact Same Size as a Mogan Silver Dollar)

WikiPedia: March 17 is Evacuation Day, a holiday observed in Suffolk County (which includes the city of Boston)[1] and also by the public schools in Cambridge[2] and Somerville, Massachusetts.[3] The holiday commemorates the evacuation of British forces from the city of Boston following the Siege of Boston, early in the American Revolutionary War. Schools and government offices (including some[4] Massachusetts state government offices located in Suffolk County) are closed. If March 17 falls on a weekend, schools and government offices are closed on the following Monday in observance. It is the same day as Saint Patrick's Day, a coincidence that played a role in the establishment of the holiday

August 15th (Sunday)

Hunt #50: I was swinging the detector for 4 hours today... and I had a blast!

This was the WIDEST variety of finds I've ever had in a day... 1830's to modern clad coins...

I was getting clad... and hit a spot that yielded 2 wheat pennies... and then I got a sweet sound @ 6-7"...

1944 Mercury Head Silver Dime (Silver # 62 for 2010)

Not to far after that... was an iffy 12/35... I was thinking maybe indian... but nope...

1944 P Silver War Nickel (Silver #63 for 2010)

Next was a nice 12/47 @ 6" and I was thinking more about silver... but the target was a mostly toasted Large Coppa...
US Large Cent - Cornet Cent 1816 - 1839 (Large Copper #5 for 2010)
Note* Notice the coin is holed... Pockets were not invented until the civil war..

12/35 again... and this one I had no Idea on the date... but knew it was IH from the back... Here is the pre-peroxide dip...

After 4-5 minutes in some boiling Peroxide... 1865 Indian Head Penny (Indian Head Penny #11 for 2010)

5 foot away... this one was so shallow under some pine I thought it was a zincoln (new zinc Lincoln Penny)...

1908 Indian Head Penny (Indian Head Penny #12 for 2010)

Next up was a faint 12/31 12/32 @ 6"
(Need to Identify this item... Looks like a RY (Railway Token for One Fare)

My last dig of the day was a 12/15 @ 5-6"

1936 Buffalo Nickel (Buffalo Nickel #6 for 2010)

Hunt #51: I hit a new spot down the coast a little ways tonight... I'd driven by it a few times and carved out some time after work to see if there were any goodies left :-)

6pm... 2 hours of light left...

Lots and lots of pulls tabs... but I did manage to rescue a few keepers :-)

Solid 12/44 @ 5"...

August 18th / 19th (Wednesday / Thursday)

Hunt #53: This post covers 2 hunts... Wednesday and Thursday...

These two nights were fun... not huge numbers... but a few nice keepers :-)

I was 99% sure this was silver.... Solid 12/45 @ 6-7"...

1950 Roosevelt Silver Dime (Silver # 65 for 2010)

I started capturing my target recovery with this coin...

This was a decent 12/47 @ 10-12" Was a pretty clean signal as there was little around it...

1826 Matron Head US Large Cent...

This next recovered coin was a very iffy signal @ 10" range...

This copper coin was almost destroyed by the years...

but... you can just make out the words...

HALF CENT

Hunt #56: Its been raining... and raining... but there was a 90 minute break in the clouds... I headed out to a place I'd visied a few times... and the previous Sunday had recovered a Large Cent, Buffalo, Merc, War Nickle, and a Train Token from...

I knew there were a few more goodies lieing in wait for me :-)

1914 D Barber Silver Quarter  (Silver # 66 for 2010)

1944 Mercury Silver Dime (Silver #68 for 2010)
This target was only 3-4 deep... Nice strong signal :-) Thought is was a clad dime...

1905 Barber Dime (Silver #69 for 2010)

This coin has strong detail and full Liberty is visable on the headband...

This is the nicest Barber Dime I have recovered...

August 26th (Thursday)

Hunt #60: I traveled to a new location in RI that I found by accident... Last sunday I left my hunt and got in 95 heading the wrong way... I got off at an exit I had never stopped at before... and thought... its raining... might as well look around... used GPS to search for a few places and spotted this site...

It did not look promising... then the wheat pennies started to flow...

I stopped at a spot along the way 1st and this button came from that stop...

<< Early to mid 1900's Musicians Button...

This target was recovered from 6-7" and was a choppy but high conductive sound as it popped through the trash...
Standing Liberty Silver Quarter (1916-1930) (Silver #70 for 2010)

August 27th (Friday)

Hunt #61:  I got a few hours of PTO and headed out mi afternoon on this Friday.. This was a FUN FUN FUN hunt! I had a blast... another day with a wide variety of finds :-)

You will see in the below video that this target tracked like a wheat pennies all along..
Probably because of how this it is worn...
1905 O Barber Silver Dime (Silver #71 for 2010)

Next out was a 5-6" 12/15 Nickel signal... and this key was staning staight up in the ground...

I was digging every repeatable and iffy target at this site... This was a 12/22... Pretty typical Pull tab signal...

but... Its a V Nickel... well... turned out there was a smaller key 3" below this target influncing the signal I suppose...

1907 V "Justice Head" Nickel

I headed around back, past the much newer building... It has a larger field... 6-10 acre range...

I picked a corner with an older (out of use) baseball backstop... It is metal... so its not to old...

This was a deep... signal that was maxed at 12" on the detector... a very spotty 12/46 keept popping in...

So I dug... and dug... I believe it was closer to 14"... but you can look see on the video...

1967 Kennedy SIlver (40%) Half Dollar (Silver # 72 for 2010)

This target popped up as 12/35 in the 3" range... Typical decaying Zinc Penny...

but... NO! It was a very small sterling silver Pandant sitting in the surface...

Sterling Silver Pandant (Silver Bling #10 for 2010)

I's had a great day so far... I had 3 wheat pennies in my pocket...

I needed 2 more to hit 300 for the year..

It took 15 or 20 minutes to recover those 2... I recorded the last one in the below video I captured on this day...

August 28th (Saturday)

Hunt #62:  I had a short hunt late in the day...

Here is another Sterling Silver object that range like a zinc penny... again probably because of the small mass...

Sterling Silver Ear Ring (Silver Bling #11)

August 30th (Monday)

Hunt #64:  I headed back to the site that has yielded so many silver coins this year looking to work a few new spots... seeking some untouch soil (there is a bit of fill there...)

This was the first good target I had... reading 12/43 and was thinking it was a wheat penny...
Perhaps its a little work or was a strange angle to come in lower than the expected 12/45...
1904 Barber Silver Dime (Silver Coin # 73 for 2010)

This target sounded like a good deep silver quarter most of the way...

It celebrated Caterpillar's 50th year delivering Tractors on Tracks...

Caterpillar 1904-1954 Token...

August 31st (Tuesday)

Hunt #65:  I headed back to the same site as the night before... I had 19 silver coins for the Aug 2010 and was seeking at least one more to hit a record 20 for any month... It did not take long to get a signal that I called silver on right from the beginning as you can see in the video below... This was a sweet smooth silver sound, a solid 12/45 @ 6-7" range...

1942 Mercury Silver Dime (Silver Coin # 74 for 2010) (Silver Coin # 20 for August 2010)

Next up was an unexpected find... but this appears to be...

Civil War Period fired 3 Ringer Lead Bullet...

Next up was a 12/32 signal... and I was expecting a wheaties as they had been hitting in this range here...

but instead I got a Wheatie and an Indian Head Penny in the same hole! That is a first for me...

1899 Indian Head Penny (IH Penny # 18 for 2010)

Next signal was @ 10" and rining up to 12/48... was not a steady, but spotty signal as you can see in the video below...

This is one of my best finds so far this year if not the best...

1892 Barber Half Dollar (Silver Coin # 75 for 2010 and # 21 for August)

Next up was a Roosevelt Silver Dime that was on edge... @ 6"

1946 Roosevelt Silver Dime (Silver Coin # 76 for 2010 and # 22 for August)

The last target out was this deeper nickel... 10/11 @ 10"

No Date Buffalo Nickel (Buffalo Nickel # 7 for 2010)
