Hunt #67: I had to be in Boston early this day and had planned a hunt for later in the afternoon on my return trip... I was plannig on stopping at a site I had been to earlier in the year with another Detectorist from the area...
While heading to this town I needed to stop at a fast food establishment for a bio break and to change into digging attire... when I noticed a spot that looked promising...
I got changed and headed back to this location... The dash said 99, and the bank I just passed said it was 100! 100 bloody degrees! Was I nuts ???
2 Minutes in and wham! You can see in the video this was hitting 12/47,
but was partially masked by the piece of copper wire in the hole...
1947 Washington Silver Quarter (Silver Coin # 78 for 2010 and # 2 for September 2010)

Next target recovered was reading 12/35 ish... @ 6"... I was thinking possibly Indian Head Cent...
1861 New Brunswick Large Copper Penny (Large Cent # 9 for 2010)
Next target was another 12/35 signal...
Looks like this may have been a Silver Spoon Bowl (Stem was broken off... and it was bend over and crushed)

12/35 was the nimber again... but this one was the tradition ones... IH Cent :-)
1904 Indian Head One Cent (Indian Head # 19 for 2010)

Next up was a pretty steady 12/45 @ 6"... but this sucker was burried in some roots...
I was fighting in the 100 degree heat to get this out recovered...
1928 Mercury Silver Dime (Silver Coin # 79 for 2010 and # 3 for September 2010)

I had a little longer to hunt when I gentleman came over and was telling me about older pictures depicting wash lines on this spot I was hunting... We chatted for a few and he told me this property was once attached to the house he walked from just across the road... build in 1667 and had been in his wife family all along and that I was welcome to come over and look around... We I did get a little time there...
As I recovered this 12/47 @ 4" I noted the swastika...The word swastika is derived from the Sanskrit word svastika meaning any lucky or auspicious object, and in particular a mark made on persons and things to denote good luck. It is composed of su meaning "good, well" and asti "to be" svasti thus means "well-being." The suffix -ka either forms a diminutive or intensifies the verbal meaning, and svastika might thus be translated literally as "that which is associated with well-being," corresponding to "lucky charm" or "thing that is auspicious."
The swastika from the 1930s became strongly associated with its iconic usage by Nazi Germany, and it has hence become stigmatized and to some extent taboo in the Western World; it has notably been outlawed in German if used as a symbol of Nazism.
So.. I figured this was an early 1900's piece... and in pretty good shape for being almost 100 year old Bank Token...
That token is from September 16, 1915, when the Commercial Trust Company opened it's doors on 193 Bowers Street, Springfield, MA.
I did get a nice quarter signal and about 5" down... up came a large old pocket watch... There was a design in the cover and the back needed some cleaned as the years had left it encrusted... I left the watch with the owners as it certainly was history for them and possible belong to a relative... I gave them some basic cleaning instruction and left my website and Email so they could send me over a picture... I do have a short video of me recovering the target...
I had a really lovely chat with them about the property, their family, and some of the history... I was invited to come back to continue my search...
September 4th (Saturday)
